In partnership with the "Reach Out and Read" program at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) at Hughes Spalding, Aaron Watson wants you to join his A-Team of Volunteers who will read to children, ages 6 months to five years old, in the waiting room at Hughes Spalding.
As a volunteer reader, you will start your day with a short orientation that will last about 15-20 minutes. You and other volunteers then will be directed to the waiting room to read to a child and his/her parent while they wait to see a doctor.
According to Reach Out and Read, thirty-four percent of American children entering kindergarten lack the basic language skills they will need to learn to read.
Reading aloud provides the richest exposure to language for young children. For more information on Reach Out and Read, visit www.reachoutandread.org.
Join Councilmember Watson in helping our youngest population gain the language skills they need to succeed in school and in life. Watson wants to see Atlanta become one of the most literate cities in America. He believes it all begins with our youngest population, children ages 6 months to five years old.
This is another Living Smarter with Aaron Watson initiative.
